Emind Successfully Deploys Cloud-Based Mobile Email, IM Services, and Facebook Gateway in Two Major Mobile Operators

The Challenge

Two major operators – Israeli and German companies – active in highly competitive markets, sought to migrate Mail, Instant Messaging and Facebook services, utilizing the extensive benefits of cloud-based solutions.
Both operators had previously implemented on-premise and off-premise in-house systems and the live results were at best mediocre. Furthermore, operational costs were prohibitive in spite of a large uptake of the services.
The operators realized that a totally new concept was necessary in order to replace existing Mail and Instant Messaging services as well as Facebook – on non-supportive devices – with a solution that would involve minimal additional CAPEX and reduced operating expenses, while ensuring full transparency during the transition stage.

The Solution

The operators turned to Emind Systems in their hunt for flexible and economical solutions that would provide subscribes with simple Mobile Mail, Instant Messaging and access to Facebook accounts.
Emind is recognized as a small, vibrant company that has the knowhow and broad hands-on experience to provide secure, Telco-grade solutions over the Cloud. Emind customized and deployed a solid, working solution that was up and running within a few weeks.
The heart of the solution was Emind’s MMGS (Mobile Messaging Gateway System), a cloud-based gateway which maps any IM/Email/Social Networking protocol to multiple communities while optimizing traffic and allowing service provisioning and advertising.
Emind utilized its goCloud approach over Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment as the basis for the deployment to enable a fully managed, secure, robust and highly available services:

  • Windows Live Messenger
  • Mobile Mail services (POP3 and IMAP)
  • Mobile Mail Push
  • Mobile Mail attachments viewing
  • Facebook Application including Chat goCloud delivers a tailored Cloud based solution customized to particular technologies and infrastructure constraints.

These Emind services have proven 99.98% availability due to the fully geo-redundancy provided by the AWS multi A-Z solution.

The Technology

Emind’s MMGS was strategically positioned in the cloud in order to overcome the need to invest in a data center deployment.
Emind thus deployed the structured mobile messaging applications within the Amazon Cloud EU Region in order to assure low latency due to close proximity to the service provider’s customer base.
A combination of Linux Servers, deployed on multiple A-Z, with traffic distribution provided by Amazon Elastic Load Balancing was used to distribute incoming traffic across multiple Amazon Cloud instances running in multi-availability zones. This ensures excellent fault tolerance by seamlessly providing the amount of load balancing capacity needed in response to incoming traffic.
The Amazon RDS relational database provides cost-efficient and resizable cloud capacity for running the reporting and accounting services, while freeing IT department from time-consuming database administration tasks.
Emind also carefully addressed security policies throughout its network with embedded cloud firewall settings using AWS Security Groups.

The Benefits

  • Distributed and highly scalable
  • Very reliable with no single point of failure
  • Open source productization and customization
  • Cloud design, deployment and management
  • Network Monitoring Systems (NMS) deployment, customization and support
  • Nominal CAPEX investment
  • Minimal long-term cost of ownership
  • Logging, monitoring, reporting and billing information is provided over a remote VPN.
  • Custom development in open source languages (Python, PHP, Elrang, and PowerShell)
